Behind the Scenes: Monthly Headshot Refreshes at Joy Photo Studio

Let’s talk about one of my favorite things: my monthly Headshot Refreshes! Once a month, I open up my cozy studio inside the Cultured Community Center (1520 West Beall, Bozeman) for a $99 session. Whether you’ve got a brand new business or just need to update your look, I promise the experience is quick, painless, and—dare I say—actually fun!

Here’s how it goes down: Show up at your scheduled time, rock your favorite outfit (or two!), and we’ll chat about your vision for your brand. We’ll crank some music, laugh a lot, and spend 30 minutes snapping away. Afterward, we’ll sit down together, scroll through your photos, and pick the ones you love most. Within a week, you’ll have a gallery bursting with images that feel 100% you.

Once your images are edited, they’re all yours! Download, print, or use them anywhere you need—website, Instagram, Facebook, business cards, you name it. The only thing I ask? Give me a little shoutout and keep those images filter-free so your brand shines through. You’ll get a download link and print instructions, all wrapped up and delivered within a week!

Let me give you a peek behind the scenes of this month’s Headshot Refresh with Destini French! Destini reached out because she’s launching a new education course to help people embrace and style their curls and coils. She needed headshots that captured her vibrant personality and could be used everywhere—from her website to her ads. Fun fact: Destini is also a pro hair and makeup artist right here in Bozeman! If you want to look and feel your best for your session, you can totally book her to work her magic before your shoot.

Seriously, professional hair and makeup makes a huge difference. You’ll pop in your photos and feel so much more confident in front of the camera! If Destini’s booked up, don’t worry—I’ve got a list of other amazing artists below who will make you feel like a million bucks.

Back to Destini—she came in with a Pinterest board full of inspiration! The plan: a clean white backdrop, perfect for adding text or graphics to her curly hair course ads. She brought serious style with a gorgeous green dress (which looked incredible on camera). Pro tip: a jacket, blazer, or some fun jewelry always gives you extra options and helps tell your brand’s story!

Just a little bit about Destini so you can get to know her in her own words… “Here at Cultured Roots, my mission is to help you have healthy hair, no matter the color of your skin or the curl pattern on your head. Whether it’s protective hair styling or natural hair, I want you to love the hair you’re in while maintaining healthy hair strands.

A little about me…. I am a Los Angeles, California native and moved to Bozeman, MT in 2011 to play basketball for the Bobcats. My career was cut short due to a career-ending injury, but when one door closes, another one opens. I taught myself how to braid my own hair when I first moved here because I quickly realized that there was nowhere that could serve me. In 2018, I began embarking on my journey to open Cultured Roots, and in 2020, I decided to quit my full-time job and go to Cosmetology school. In 2021, I became a licensed Cosmetologist, and in 2024, I opened The Cultured Community Center, which allowed me to expand Cultured Roots MT into a multi-chair salon.

I love my job cause it found me, and I am proud to be the owner and operator of Cultured Roots. I have the opportunity to make every person who sits in my chair feel great about themselves. I also get to meet new people every day. I am always taking courses to learn the latest trends and styles to offer to my clients! I look forward to giving you a Cultured Roots Experience!”

We totally nailed Destini’s one-hour session! We shot everything—full-body, close-up headshots, and a bunch of personality-packed images perfect for her ads. Want to see the magic? Scroll down for some of my favorite shots!

Plus, I even whipped up a few Canva mockups to show how these images can turn into eye-catching ads for her new course. You did the session, nailed your look, and now it’s time to let your photos work for you and get your business noticed!

I just took an amazing social media course with Good Day Marketing, and she said that consumers have to see your advertisement at least 3 times before they act on it! So having multiple images to play with on advertisements will make it stick in people’s heads and get you clients!
